Rider Waite Tarot - tarot cards

There are many different varieties of tarot cards, but the most popular and classic set was designed by Rider Waite and was published back in 1909.

The Tarot set has 78 cards divided between the major and minor arcana. The major arcana contains 22 cards with beautiful symbolism on each card. The minor arcana is divided into the groups of staff, cups, coins/pentagrams and swords.

What is unique about the Rider-Waite set, and one of the biggest reasons for its enormous popularity, is that all the cards, including the minor arcana, show scenes of figures and symbols. Before the Rider-Waite set, the minor arcana in almost all tarot sets only showed the number of the ''suit'' sign (eg 10 of Swords corresponding to the 10 of Spades in playing cards). The illustrated scenes in the Rider-Waite set make it possible to interpret and understand the cards without necessarily having to consult a book. The Rider-Waite set has since become the model most newer tarot sets are built around.
